I only read autobiographical type books (when not colouring others in) I can honestly say without an inch of bias this is as good as a book I’ve read. Yes, it resonates as the subject matter & a few of the people who have influenced the author, I’ve also been lucky to come into contact with too. The book though is much, much more than a tale of both codes of Rugby. It’s a lesson in life to all of us, about breaking down perceived barriers, being true to yourself, best practice, being open minded, whilst maintaining a moral & professional compass - A non negotiable. But most of all it shows us that no matter what your background is, we all deserve the best for ourselves - whatever your aspiration, this is a book that shows you anything can be achieved if you want it enough & are willing to make the sacrifices. The biggest lessons are the oft forgotten basic fundamentals in life, the importance of saying please & thank you, being honest, giving of your time, taking an interest in others & sharing any success you may be lucky to have along the way. So Damian, you’ll have to throw the ‘imposter syndrome’ in the bin mate. You’ve written a brilliantly engaging, thought provoking & inspiring book. Congratulations! If anyone’s looking for a book which will make you think & offer some self help guidance, I can heartily recommend….

Just getting tucked into the Damian McGrath book this evening. I'm already nodding a lot in agreement and I've just done my first browse through. He thanks Karl Fix in the intro which means a lot and shows how quickly he integrated into the Canadian rugby community. I've been running BC Rugby News for almost 20 years, I've seen the offshore experts come and go, but l've never seen anyone "get it" as quickly as Damian and adapt to the reality of rugby in Canada. It's a theme he mentions early on when discussing how to be a successful coach or leader, "the guiding principles are all there but unless you adapt them to the circumstances you find yourself in, they are meaningless". How true, and vet so many "experts" coming into a new environment fail to do this. I scanned to the back (don't worry I'II read everything in between and saw this excerpt from the Canada 7s team he coached, "His commitment to helping grow not only the 7s program, but also rugby across Canada, is something that has not been seen from an international coach in our Canadian rugby community". True words, and 1 100% agree with their assessment. Damian is one of a kind, and I would love to see him back in Canada running both the 7s and XVs high performance programs. lIl do a more detailed book review on the website when finished but these are my initial thoughts on first browse through.
